Kia ora and welcome to this Ākina update.

We hope you are well and enjoying some sense of normality as we continue to adjust to life under Covid-19 Alert Level 2. For business and enterprises there will be huge challenges ahead, but we're starting to see that there will be huge innovation and opportunities too.

We don't want to return right back to normal though, as we've shared in our recent think piece on Building New Zealand's Impact Economy. This is our call to include social, cultural and environmental outcomes in this recovery period for our people and the economy. We've had a great response to the document so far, and are interested to hear what you think.

If you're a social enterprise or focused on impact work, check out our new platform that hosts and curates relevant content just for you including tools, resources and external links (more below). If you need more direct support, you can request our support through the Covid-19 support programme but get in quick!

Building New Zealand's Impact Economy

Our economic recovery from Covid-19 presents a huge opportunity to do things differently. We’re starting to see calls from businesses and community groups for a fairer, more sustainable and regenerative economy.

At Ākina, we’ve been doing some thinking about how we can contribute to that vital discussion. The result is Building New Zealand’s Impact Economy which details big-picture thinking about an impact focussed approach to our economic recovery.

Read it here, and let us know what you think!

A new online space for social enterprise

We’re excited to announce we’re trialling a new platform just for social enterprise.

Social Shifters is an online platform created by Canada’s Social Enterprise Institute. It supports online learning through downloadable tools and resources.

Ākina has worked with the Social Shifter team to create a New Zealand version for those working towards positive impact here in Aotearoa.

The platform will grow its content library over time, so send through suggestions of what you want to see.

This NZ version is a pilot – which means we’re testing it as a potential solution. We encourage you to let us know what you think through the forms on the Impact Initiative website.

Covid-19 Pivot Support

In response to the current Covid-19 crisis, Ākina is offering a new service through the Regional Business Partner Network (RBPN) voucher scheme.

If you've signed up the voucher scheme, you can select to work with us through our Covid-19 Pivot Support service. It's designed to help impact enterprises do things differently by working with you to review your business model and identify opportunities to ‘pivot’, while keeping your core impact or purpose at the centre.

The Time for Social Procurement

"What a year the last couple of weeks have been." Our Director of Social Procurement, Dr. Seán Barnes, recently coauthored this piece with Mark Daniels from Social Traders, our sister organisation in Australia. Read it here
