The Disability Action Plan presents priority work programmes and actions developed through a co-design process by government agencies, disabled people and their representative organisations. The work programmes and actions will advance implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the New Zealand Disability Strategy 2016-2026. With an increasing awareness of diversity in our workforce, being inclusive has become the catch cry, but how do we make sure we’re inclusive of everyone?
To help organisations tap into the skills and experience of disabled people, the Ministry of Social Development with the State Services Commission is delivering an all-of-government programme, led by Anne Hawker, which aims to increase disabled people working in the public sector. Supporting this work is the Lead Toolkit, which is a practical resource for managers in the public sector and is also relevant for workplaces in the private sector, non-government organisations and wider. SSPA has today released an independent study into the gap between what the social service sector is funded to deliver and what it in fact delivers. The study by MartinJenkins found the government is underfunding social service providers by an estimated $630 million a year. The government funds social service providers for less than two thirds of the actual costs of delivering the services they are contracted to provide. Read the report
