Community Waitakere support asset-based, resident-led neighbourhood development to strengthen communities from the inside out. We work alongside individuals and groups who are creating positive change in their neighbourhoods and aim to enable leaderful communities. 

Neighbourhood development involves a lot of “do-it-yourself” and very little “do-it-alone”. Community Waitakere support resident-led activities by helping people activate their ideas and by providing information, guidance and direction when desired.

Community Waitakere are currently working alongside Avondale Community Action, Greater Glen Eden and Massey Matters to support flax-roots neighbourhood initiatives.

The street, block and neighbourhood are the human scale in the city and community-led projects tend to be effective at this scale. This is because individuals can see a role for themselves at this local scale, as well as seeing the value of their contribution alongside that of others. (Denise Bijoux, 2013)
