Our History

In July 1983, an eager and passionate group of West Aucklanders representing various organisations were meeting on a regular basis to support community networking.  This group became WADCOSS, the West Auckland District Council of Social Services.  WADCOSS became a significant player in Waitakere City, taking the lead in many community initiatives and advocacy projects.  WADCOSS was able to identify issues and trends and then focus on these and lobby for change, and was recognised by the council as being “the primary coordinating organisation for Community and Social Services in Waitakere City.”

In 2005, WADCOSS changed its name to Community Waitakere and Charitable Trust status was awarded in 2008.  In 2006, Community Waitakere became formally recognised as one of Waitakere City Council’s key strategic partners.  Community Waitakere is currently in a phase of revitalisation and growth and has a small dynamic team led by the recently appointed Manager Pat Watson as well as a newly formed Community Development team carrying out external advocacy, leadership, capacity building and project development functions.
