Project Twin Streams

Project Twin Streams is an exciting and ambitious project for Waitakere’s communities to restore and reclaim the city’s streams as the heart of our neighbourhoods. Community Waitakere is one of several community organisations contracted to carry out restoration work on the stream banks.

Our aim is to create an environment on the stream which attracts birds, provides food and homes for fish and insects with walkways/cycle ways and picnic areas for people.

Streams are the lifeblood of our planet and our aim is to deal with the damage caused by the destruction of native plant cover, the spread of invasive weeds and dumping of rubbish in its waters. For most of it’s history, Henderson Creek was unpolluted and brimming with life.  The waters were a rich source of food for Te Kawerau A Maki and the European settlers who followed. It was known to Te Kawerau A Maki as Te Wai O Pareira- the river of Pareira – after the ancestress who initially settled at the mouth of the river and later at Opareira in Henderson Valley. (Source Te Kawerau A Maki Walkway/Cycleway project report, April 2006).

On our stretch of the creek we work with:-
Schools – both primary and high schools introducing children to the process of restoring degraded environments, the creatures that live in and beside the streams, and the principles of maintaining healthy waterways.

Community groups – these reflect the ethnic diversity of our community and include residents from a retirement complex, new settlers groups, staff from government departments, businesses, and church members and others.

As well as the regular work done by groups on their “adopted areas” Henderson Creek holds several public events during the year including Community Planting Days and the annual Big Clean Up Day held in September each year.  These events are educational, fun and free with live music, art activities, and free BBQ.  Check out www.projecttwinstreams.org.nz for more infomation.
