Disaster Resilience

Strengthening communities to lead hyper-local disaster resilience

When disaster strikes, community groups are often the first to respond, providing vital assistance and support. Community Waitākere is working closely with local leaders to ensure they and their communities are prepared for emergencies.

Through workshops, one-on-one coaching, and tailored resources, Community Waitākere is making disaster preparedness accessible and actionable.

The initiative focuses on de-mystifying what it means to be ready for a crisis and how to mobilise an effective community response. Leaders gain practical skills and the confidence to coordinate efforts, ensuring their communities are supported during critical times.

Cars sit in a flooded carpark, wooden bollards sticking up out of the water up to the windows on some. A small grassy patch is seen at the bottom of the screen. There is a yellow road crossing sign, and trees in the distance.

Workshops cover key areas such as emergency planning, communication strategies, and resource management. Leaders are encouraged to develop personalised response plans that align with their community’s unique needs, drawing on local knowledge and strengths.

One-on-one coaching provides additional support, addressing specific challenges and fostering leadership skills. The impact of this work extends beyond the initial training sessions.

A hall full of people sits in a u-shaped formation of tables, all discussing and working together on some mahi. There is a laptop with a presentation on it on a small table at the front, and another table to the left back of the hall with paper on it

Community leaders report increased confidence in their ability to act during emergencies and a deeper sense of connection within their neighbourhoods. These ripple effects are laying the foundation for stronger, more resilient communities. While the work to date is seen as a stepping stone, its influence continues to grow, with leaders sharing their knowledge and experiences, further embedding resilience into their communities.

Community Waitākere remains committed to this vital work, ensuring local leaders have the tools and support they need to guide their communities through times of uncertainty and beyond.
