Revive Rathgar

A Community United for Change

What happens when a community comes together with a shared vision and speaks with one voice? For the people of Rathgar, it means change is already beginning.

Revive Rathgar is a community-led kaupapa bringing together residents, schools, businesses, faith groups and local organisations to create a safer, more connected neighbourhood. Supported by Community Waitākere, Te Ohu Whakawhanaunga, Seed2Harvest, and other local partners, the initiative has grown from conversations about what matters most into a united call for action.

Following a series of community conversations, local residents identified their priorities for the neighbourhood. Those ideas were shaped into a set of clear asks, which were presented to Henderson-Massey Local Board members at a recent community hui.

One of the strongest messages came from local rangatahi, who spoke about the importance of creating safer streets and public spaces now—not years down the track. Their voices reinforced the need for practical improvements that current and future generations can benefit from.

The community's priorities include a safer pedestrian crossing at the Larnoch Road and Rathgar Road intersection, improvements to local alleyways through better lighting and public art, upgrades to Kingsdale Reserve, and the long-term aspiration of establishing a community hub.

Community Waitākere Climate Action Community Developer Simon Vincent says the strength of the project comes from the people behind it.

"These weren't ideas developed by one organisation—they came directly from the community. By bringing together residents, schools and local groups, we were able to present a shared vision for Rathgar and demonstrate just how much support there is for these improvements."

The hui has already helped build momentum. Henderson-Massey Local Board members have committed to progressing several of the community's requests, including investigating improved lighting and safety in local alleyways, trimming overgrown vegetation, exploring creative pathway designs, and continuing to advocate for a safer pedestrian crossing with Auckland Transport.

While there is still work to do, Revive Rathgar shows what is possible when communities lead the conversation and work together towards a common goal. With local people continuing to drive the kaupapa, the future of Rathgar is being shaped by those who know it best.
