Honouring Stephen’s Contribution

Recognising the passion and clarity he brought to Community Waitākere as Trustee and Treasurer.

When Stephen Parker first joined the Community Waitākere Board 15 years ago, he brought with him two things that would shape his legacy: a deep commitment to community and an unwavering belief in the importance of sound financial stewardship. As Treasurer, Stephen never saw numbers as abstract—they were always connected to people, projects, and the bigger vision of a fairer, more just society.

Over the years, Stephen became the steady voice in the room, translating balance sheets into real life implications and ensuring that Trustees always had a clear picture of where Community Waitākere stood and where we could go. As Co-Chair Charlie Moore reflects: “Stephen has always played a key role in communicating and interpreting our financial opportunities and challenges to the other Trustees. He made sure we understood not just the numbers, but how they related to the work we do.”

His ability to balance heart and head was unique, as a strong advocate for our kaupapa, and fiercely passionate in challenging unnecessary bureaucracy that got in the way of community outcomes. Those who worked alongside him came to know his generosity—his willingness to dig deeper, ask hard questions, and give his time whenever it was needed.

As he steps down, Stephen leaves behind not just strong financial systems and sound governance, but a spirit of integrity and a reminder of what it means to serve with both commitment and conviction. His contribution has been immense, his shoes not easily filled, and his impact will continue to be felt in the work of Community Waitākere for years to come.
