Te Au o Te Koopua is a name gifted to Community Waitākere by tangata whenua Te Kawerau a Maki, and we are incredibly honoured and humbled to have been bestowed with it. It is a place that holds great mana, as the community space we lease sits on ancestral land where iwi gathered to support each other, just as we do in our community development mahi today.

‘Au’ comes from ‘Te Au o Te Whenua’, an ancestor of Maki and ‘koopua’ means deep pool, signifying the place where we are located being at the meeting of the two streams: Opanuku and Waikumete.
